The veritable joy and agony to retro gaming, by retro gaming I mean games of yore and by agony I mean the sheer frustration in resolving making your super uber gaming machine play games that were made a decade ago. Honestly, it doesn't always cause a problem - but when it does, finding the solution is a torturous process.
In particular I came across an issue with my installation of Diablo II. Installation was quick and smooth and not a single error from that standpoint. The pain began when I tried to play said game of good monster bashing memory. It gave me the error - that I had to put in my play disc in the drive and gave me the options of retry or cancel. Clicking retry only brought up the error again. Clicking cancel left you looking at your desktop and the icon of the game.
I immediately began to search the Blizzard forums, but found no solution. I did however find many forum posts of similar players in my current state. So, to help I thought to post this in the hopes that a search engine may find it and deliver you, the reader, with some peace in the form of my solution (this applies to Windows users, sorry Mac people).
- In the Start Menu go to "All Programs" and under the entry for the Diablo II game (that is currently mocking you) there is a button for a video test. Run this test.
- When this test runs its course it will present you with its findings. Do not be fooled - as I was - and select the recommended 3D option for this game. Choose the 2D option.
- After that the game will play.
I do not know why selecting a 3D option cripples your computer from recognizing a disc, but hopefully this will solve your problem as it did mine. Happy creature bashing!
