Square Enix released crisis Core in March of 2008 for PlayStation Portable. It is the fourth installment to the Compilation Final Fantasy VII games. Crisis Core is the prequel to the Final Fantasy VII game. The other games in the installment are Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus and Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode.
The main character is Zack Fair, a soldier. He is an operative who works for the Shinra Electric Power Company. Players have full control over Zack in the game. Crisis Core has a new battle system called Digital Mind Wave. It is a series of reels, which spins if there is soldier points left to consume. Each reel rotates on its own and if you line up three reels that are the same character and value then a power-up is awarded to Zack. You can attack enemies physically or with magic. Enemies are all over the field screen and battles takes place in real time.
Characters from the other Final Fantasy VII games are present in this game as well. Cloud Strife, Professor Hojo, Jenovoa, Weiss, Nero and Genesis Rhapsodos are some of the returning characters. The main villain Sephiroth also returns. The game takes you to the war with the Wutai and to the events at Nibelheim. It also takes you to the time just before the Final Fantasy VII beginning. The game was directed by Hajime Tabata, and the character design was by Tetsuya Nomura with Yoshinori Kitase overseeing production. Yoshinori directed the first Final Fantasy VII.
