The Portal video game is composed of a series of puzzles that needs to be solved by teleporting the player’s character and other simple objects with the use of a Portal Gun (a unit that can create an opening between flat planes). This action/puzzle game was developed by Valve Corporation and debuted in the fall of 2007. The single player is challenged by an AI named GLaDOS to complete each puzzle that is located within a learning center. A promised reward of a cake will be given once all puzzles are completed. The Portal Gun is an interesting device which makes for a very unique experience in the game.
Portal features two characters: the silent player- named Chell, and GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), which is an electronic artificial intelligence that monitors and directs the player.
The player controls Chell as she is challenged to navigate through a series of rooms using the portal gun. This gun can create two distinctive orange or blue openings. All objects that travel through one portal will exit through the other, regardless of color. Chell is sometimes provided with cubes that she can pick up and climb on, or to hold down large buttons that open doors. The game also features some very interesting uses of physics, such as creating an endless loop in order to gain momentum to move to a new area. These concepts, in addition to the humorous nature of the game and its impressive visuals, have allowed it to garner positive reviews from nearly all critics.
