EA Redwood Shores and Electronic Arts created Dead Space for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Dead Space was released on October 18, 2008 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was released on October 20, 2008 for PC. Dead Space is rated "M" which stands for mature. No one can purchase this game unless they are 17 or older. Dead Space is rated "M" because of its intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and strong language. Dead Space is a third-person shooter, survival, and horror-action video game. Third-person shooter means that the character is visible on the screen and you primarily are shooting other people or objects.

Dead Space is only a single player game. The main characters are Isaac Clarke, Kendra Daniels, Zach Hammonds, Dr. Challus Mercer, Doctor Terrence Kyne, and Nicole Brennan. The character that you play is Isaac Clarke. You must fight level after level and take down all the Necromorphs in sight. Necromorphs are humans that an unknown alien species transformed into reanimated figures. Some weapons in the game are a Triple-Barreled Automatic Military Rifle, Plasma Cutter, Flamethrower, Motorized Pulse Rifle, Remote Control Disc Ripper, Supercollider Contact Beam, and Force Cannon.

Dead Space won four awards in 2008. Those awards were: Best New IP, Best Atmosphere, Best Sound Design, and Game Informer magazine gave it the Game of the Month Award and named it in their top 50 games of 2008. The publisher of Dead Space announced another version was being created for the Nintendo Wii.
